3 Minute DIY Peppermint Hot Chocolate (Natural, Dairy Free)



  • Here's a list of all the ingredients together. Only 5 ingredients... pretty awesome, right?

  • First add in the 1/2 tbsp to 1 tbsp extra virgin coconut oil. I love the Dr. Bronners brand because not only is it super high quality, but it really does taste better than other brands I've used.

  • I'd suggest you start with 1/2 tbsp and add more later if the peppermint hot chocolate isn't quite as rich enough as you'd like. Remember, coconut oil is one of those good-for-you oils so you don't have to feel guilty about eating a whole tablespoon should you decide to (I'm officially giving you permission!).

  • Anyway, add in the coconut oil and pop it in the microwave for around 20-30 seconds until the coconut oil is completely melted.

  • Next, add in the 2 tbsp maple syrup and stir.

  • Remember to use real maple syrup here (none of that fake syrup or it won't taste the same). Plus real maple syrup is one of those healthy sugar substitutes that's full of minerals and really brings a lovely richness to the peppermint hot chocolate.

  • And speaking of chocolate...

  • Next, add in 2 tbsp cocoa powder. You can use cacao or cocoa powder, just as long as it is unsweetened.

  • Then give the ingredients a stir with a spoon.

  • The beauty of this recipe is that it incorporates all the flavors together in an ultra-concentrated chocolate sauce so that it's much easier to blend once you add the milk.

  • YUM!! Doesn't that sauce look (and smell) amazing?

  • Next, add about 1 cup (depending on the size of your mug) of the coconut milk drink.

  • Stir everything together.

  • Note: You're going to see this and notice that it doesn't blend very well together. That's because we've added room temperature (or cold) coconut milk to the warm chocolate sauce and that causes everything to separate. Another quick trip in the microwave (maybe 1 to 1.5 minutes) will cause everything to warm up to the same temperature and blend better.

  • Lastly, add in that wonderful peppermint flavor!

  • Now here's the tricky part: Everyone has a different threshold for what they consider the "right" amount of peppermint flavor, so I suggest starting with a small amount and slowly building up until you have the flavor you desire.

  • One drop is actually quite potent and might be too much, so I'd suggest using what I call the "toothpick method": Tilt the bottle slightly until the oil is in the lip around the outside of the bottle and then run a toothpick in this area, catching the oil, and stir it (or drip it) into the drink. Do this several times (using a new toothpick each time if your toothpick touches the drink liquid in order to prevent bottle contamination).

  • Once you have the right consistency, give it a final stir to blend all the flavors together.

  • And there you have it!

  • Delicious, dairy free peppermint hot chocolate decadence in under 3 minutes flat!

  • And by the way, if you'd like to make this a Peppermint Mocha, simply add a little espresso or coffee to your hot chocolate. Enjoy!
