Real Marriage: Why My Spouse Is Not The Enemy

A real marriage will never be picture-perfect and is constantly in a state of change.

That's because real marriages are founded in real life (which is always changing and of course never perfect).

So the question is… how can our marriages remain strong and healthy amidst the very real ups-and-downs of life?

This is a question I've come face-to-face with lately as I've seen our normally very easy marriage take some hits from the craziness of life.

Life is still good… we are still in love… and our marriage is still very strong.

However, this season has made me aware of how easy it is to allow outside influences to shape daily interactions with my husband. It's caused me to consider how I interact with him… and to watch how I view him.

In those recent moments where I’ve had to repent for my words or actions (things that I am truly embarrassed and saddened that came out of my mouth), the Lord has impressed a phrase on my heart that is bringing conviction, clarity, and comfort:

My spouse is not the enemy.

I wrote about this as part of the 31 Days to A Better Marriage Series (Spring 2015), and you can read the entire article here.

I'd invite you to follow along with the entire series as the ladies and I are talking about real marriage… and offering hope and encouragement that yes, marriage is an incredible blessing from God (even through the imperfect reality of life).
